Looking at Theory X and Theory Y in relation to setting the Class Environment. Theory X is at the more strict end of the continuum and Theory Y is towards the more negotiable end. I think with different teaching climates you want to creat a balance where you students are comfortable with you and their peers and feel safe to express their views and also still have structure and focus in place for learning to occur.

  1. Hi Lou,

When I read the X-Y theories I wondered whether there is any correlation between types of assessments and the more suitable teaching climate.

Does Theory X fit better in proscriptive assessment regimes where it is is necessary to control learning 'outcomes'? Does the proscription cause disinterest in students and therefore necessitate Theory X? Can assessment frameworks and criteria be set so as to promote the hunger for education that allows for Theory Y? Can we embrace novelty of thought that lives in Y-ville?

My query implies that Y is better than X and I think your point on balancing these ends is needed to get X-students towards the Y. X style is safe (and possibly contributes to boredom) but the Y requires confidence and trust in the student and there group. Ooo, enter ABL + Y = ABLY :)

Exciting place to be working Lou... I'm looking forward to reading more.
